Because the laser targets a small area, leaving the surrounding areas intact, Ocean Drive Dermatology medical providers can treat different areas of the face with different settings, depending on the depth of damage and the sensitivity of the area. In addition, the narrow ablative channels in the skin allow for a faster recovery than a full-field ablative laser that removes 100 percent of the skin. ProFractional Laser induces collagen and elastin, meaning lower initial downtime and skin that continues to improve for up to six months post-treatment (s). It reduces pore size, improves pigment, and improves fine lines and wrinkles. Deep scars may take additional treatments and may also include fillers. Recovery is quick, depending on the type and depth of treatment.
During your consultation for ProFractional Laser Vero Beach medical professionals at Ocean Drive will assess your overall health, habits, skin type, and characteristics of your scar(s), if being treated. Current medical conditions, prescriptions and supplements, smoking habits, and the tendency for cold sores will need to be shared with the doctor. It is important to be honest about the results you expect from treatment.
If treatment is agreed on, your medical professional will give you instructions on how to prepare for your ProFractional Laser treatment, including staying out of the sun (you cannot be treated with a sunburn or tan), what medicines to avoid, what supplements will aid healing, and to refrain from smoking for two weeks prior.
A ProFractional Laser procedure will usually take between 30-60 minutes if performed on the entire neck and face. Smaller areas or scars are simple procedures and can take less time. A topical anesthetic will be applied to the skin before the procedure, and an anti-anxiety and pain reliever such as Pro-Nox will be available if needed. Most treatments are performed on the entire face and neck, though scars can be treated anywhere on the body. ProFractional lasers are especially effective in treating perioral and lower eyelids.
After two to three treatments, you can expect to see firmer, brighter skin with fewer visible blemishes. ProFractional Laser treatments won’t remove scars; you may see little improvement for the first few weeks. Over time, the scar will fade, itchiness and pain will decrease, and the scar’s range of movement will be improved. Whether your treatment is targeting aging skin or scars, you will continue to see improvement for six months post-treatment.
Depending on the treatment type and depth, you can return to work within two days after a ProFractional Laser treatment, with full recovery in a week. There will be some pinpoint bleeding and swelling for a few days. Vaseline and non-adherent dressings are recommended for post-treatment care. Corrective treatments (scar revision and acne scars) will have a longer recovery that may include 24 to 48 hours of pinpoint bleeding, swelling, and occlusive ointments for several days. The entire recovery time is typically seven to ten days, based on the aggressiveness of the treatment.
Scar removal is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered under most insurance policies.
For ProFractional treatments for scarring, typically, one to three treatments will be required. For more extensive scarring processes, additional treatments may be needed. Corrective treatments help even tone, improve texture, reduce pore size, and improve fine lines and wrinkles; typically, a series of three treatments provide the best results.
