The Contour TRL by Sciton is a full-field ablative erbium: YAG laser that is fully customizable. A full-field ablative laser is different from our ProFractional Laser. When using the Contour TRL, we are removing 100 percent of the targeted skin layer in the treatment area, while a fractionated laser is simply creating microscopic holes in the skin, thus only treating a “fraction” of the treatment area. Depending on the depth, we can remove just a thin layer of the epidermis (top layer of skin), and we call this a MicroLaser Peel.
Alternatively, we could choose to really target rhytides or “wrinkles” and completely remove the first layer of skin and then start meticulously removing the second layer of skin called the dermis. Our medical providers can perform laser resurfacing as an outpatient procedure, so you won't have to spend the night in the hospital. Instead, during ablative laser resurfacing Vero Beach providers at Ocean Drive Dermatology will administer a numbing anesthetic to your skin. You may be sedated if you elect to have your entire face resurfaced.
By focusing a highly concentrated beam of light energy, or laser, on the skin, ablative laser resurfacing can dramatically improve skin texture and tone. A laser is used to remove the outer layer (epidermis) and heat the underlying (dermis). By stimulating collagen formation, this heat treatment improves the look and feel of the skin. Depending on the size of the region being treated and the method employed, ablative laser resurfacing can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. In many cases, a single therapy is sufficient.
Recovery after ablative laser resurfacing may take a few days to a few weeks for complete healing, depending on the intensity of your treatment.
There are additional laser add-on treatments to help speed up the healing process. Your skin's quality and look will improve once the treated area heals. Protect your skin from the sun at all times after laser resurfacing. New sun damage can undermine your efforts. It is best to use a moisturizer and sunscreen with an SPF of 30 daily.
The first few days after treatment, we see you in the office every day for Oxy-Mist treatments to help speed your recovery and confirm everything is healing appropriately. We will provide you with all the products needed to assist in your skin recovering as fast as possible. After the first week, you can usually change over to a hydrating moisturizer and cleanser. Usually, by ten days to two weeks, the skin has healed.
However, you may notice that your skin is still red or a shade of pink. This can last a few weeks to several months. It is okay to apply makeup at this point, and our MedSpa can assist in finding the correct one. Sunscreen is a must during recovery and for the months ahead to protect your new skin. There is a little bit more post-care involved in a full-field ablative erbium laser like the ContourTRL, but the results tend to be worth the effort.

Compared to our Halo Laser or ProFractional laser, this is a more painful treatment with a different type of downtime. Although this procedure can be done awake with appropriate narcotics and anxiolytics, as well as facial nerve blocks, it is not something we recommend. Along with possible pain concerns, it is a very loud and smelly treatment.
